POLICE in Lagos State have arraigned 49 year old Prince Cornell Demola before the Isolo Magistrate Court and charged him with theft for allegedly defrauding a blind man to the tune of N280,000 (£975).
In the first such case of its kind, Prince Demola defrauded John Sunday who had approached him for assistance to secure accommodation. Rather than Prince Demola assisting him as promised, he turned out to be a fraud, fleeing with the money Mr Sunday had given him to secure an apartment.
According to the police, the incident happened at Ilasamaja where Mr Sunday had met Prince Demola as neighbours before he became blind. Prince Demola offered to assist him and promised to add to the money given to him by Mr Sunday.
Later Prince Demola told Mr Sunday that he had secured a mini-flat apartment located at Dauda Oseni Street Ilasamaja, and asked to bring the money he had so that he would add his own. According to police, Prince Demola took Mr Sunday to a Guaranty Trust Bank located at Abimbola Way in Ilasamaja where he has an account and helped him to withdraw N280,000.
That, however, was the last time Mr Sunday saw Prince Demola as he bolted with the money and never got any accommodation for him. Following the crime, Mr Sunday reported to the police who trailed Prince Demola and arrested him.
At the station, he reportedly confessed that he had spent Mr Sunday’s money and the apartment he promised him did not belong to him and as such he had no access to it. Prince Demola was subsequently charged with obtaining money under false pretence and stealing under the Criminal Code.
He, however pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read out in court. Presiding magistrate, Mrs AO Adedayo granted Prince Demola bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum, remanding him in prison custody pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
