OVER 10,000 Muslims have converted to Christianity at a special crusade in the Pakistani city of Lahore in what is being described as the world's largest ever conversion between the two main Abrahamic faiths.
Pastor Anwar Fazal from Eternal Life Ministries (ELM) in Pakistan arranges what he calls a big Healing Crusade every Wednesday in Lahore that attracts thousands of people Yesterday's gathering was reported to be the biggest of these meetings by far and saw thousands of Muslims use the occasion to convert to Christianity.
Pakistan is a predominantly Islamic country with between 95% and 98% of its 195m citizens being Muslims with only about 1.6% of the population being Christian. In terms of population, gross domestic product, literacy rates, power supply, infrastructural development and other indexes, Pakistan is the most similar nation to Nigeria on earth.
At yesterday's rally, 10,000 Muslims accepted Christ in one night and over the course of the week about 150,000 Muslims were converted in total. Generally Christians in Pakistan face persecution from the government and other officials because Islam is the country's official and state religion.
Pakistan has been a hotbed of fundamentalist and radical Islam lately, with the Taliban and Al-Queda having large followings there. Many terrorists also use Pakistan as a base from which to venture into Afghanistan where they are trained to become suicide bombers.
