REPENTANT Boko Haram terrorist Mohammed Hayatu who is the father of the baby of rescued Chibok schoolgirl Amina Ali Nkeki has been arrested by the Nigerian Army for his role in the abduction of the pupils.
Earlier this week, members of the vigilante group the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) found Amina while she was out gathering firewood in the Sambisa Forest. She had a four month old baby with her and a suspected Boko Haram terrorist identified as Mohammed Hayatu, has come forward to claim he is the father of the child.
It is unclear as to whether they were found together or if he came forward voluntarily but Mr Hayatu has now been handed over to the Nigerian Army for interrogation. It appears that he will be granted an amnesty under the government's Operation Safe Corridor which offers a pardon for those fighters who lay down their arms and embrace peace.
Nigerian Army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman, said the suspected Boko Haram terrorist has been taken to the headquarters of the 25 Task Force Brigade, Damboa along with the rescued Chibok schoolgirl. Military intelligence officers would likely want to find out more about his role in the abduction of the girls on April 14 2014 and seek more information on Boko Haram's current status.
Col Usman said: "Please recall that we informed you that one of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls has been rescued. Further to that, in continuation of Operation Crackdown, troops of 25 Brigade Damboa in conjunction with Civilian JTF deployed in one of the blocking positions at Baale, near Damboa rescued one Miss Amina Ali and a suspected Boko Haram terrorist, Mohammed Hayatu, who claimed to be her husband.
"Both were brought to Headquarters 25 Task Force Brigade Damboa and preliminary investigation shows that she is indeed one of the Chibok schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram terrorists on April 14 2014 in Chibok and her name is Amina Ali as against Falmata Mbalala that was earlier stated. In addition, she is a nursing mother with a four-month old baby girl who was named Safiya."
He added that both the suspected Boko Haram terrorist and the nursing mother have been taken to Maiduguri for further medical attention and screening. Amina will later be received by President Muhammadu Buhari at State House in Abuja.
