CHELSEA captain John Terry has confirmed that he will be in Nigeria on May 27 for the centenary and testimonial game of former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo due to take place at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port-Harcourt.
Nigeria's second most capped player ever, Yobo, retired from international football after the last World Cup and will be honoured with a testimonial game in the Rivers State capital. African super stars like Samuel Eto'o and Yaya Toure are also expected at the event tagged The Joseph Yobo Centenary Game being put together by the Joseph Yobo Foundation in partnership with the Rivers State government.
Former Super Eagles stars that will be on show on the day include Jay Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, Ifeanyi Udeze, Peter Rufai, Christian Chukwu and Austin Eguaveon. Yobo's former manager at Everton David Motes has also pledged to be there in person in honour of the first player he signed when he took over managing the Toffees.
Terry, who captained England national football team between August 2006 and February 2010 and again from March 2011 to February 2012, has now confirmed his availability for the game. He is Chelsea’s most successful captain, having led them to four Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and one Uefa Champions League title since 2004.
Waidi Akanni, the game's coordinator, said: “We are really excited by the confirmation of John Terry for the Yobo Centenary Game in Port Harcourt. He’s one big player that is very popular here in the country because of England and Chelsea’s large followership in Nigeria.”
Terry is one of five players to have made over 500 appearances for Chelsea and is also the club’s all-time highest scoring defender. In 2007, he became the first captain to lift the FA Cup at the new Wembley Stadium following Chelsea’s 1–0 win over Manchester United and was also the first player to score an international goal there, scoring a header in England’s 1–1 draw with Brazil.
Other big name players from Europe expected to honour Yobo with their presence include Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney. Last weekend, Yobo who was special guest at Everton’s home game against Bournemouth was duly hailed by fans who remembered his 10 years adventure there.
