EFCC launches manhunt for Fani-Kayode after arresting former Imo governor Udenwa

altECONOMIC and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives have launched a manhunt for former aviation minister Chief Femi Fani-Kayode over the sum of N2.5bn (£8.6m) withdrawn from the account of the National Security Adviser's Office in 2015.

During the last election campaign, Chief Fani-Kayode was the media director of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign, which can come under scrutiny lately. Chief Fani-Kayode who has declared that he knew nothing about the withdrawal of the cash from the Central Bank of Nigeria, through the national security adviser's office, admitted, however, that campaign funds were paid into the account of a company linked with former finance minister Senator Nenadi Usman, from where it was shared to him and others.

Senator Nenadi Usman, the PDP campaign director during the last elections was arrested for allegedly receiving N2.5bn (£8.6m) from the former national security adviser Col Sambo Dasuki. Some of this money was passed on to Chief Fani-Kayode who has told the EFCC to go and do their worst over the matter.

However, the EFCC believes he has some questions to answer and efforts to arrest him have begun. Yesterday, the EFCC arrested former Imo state governor Achike Udenwa, one of the beneficiaries of the money, meant for arms purchase that was allegedly diverted to fund former president Dr Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign.

Chief Fani-Kayode reportedly got N840m of the money paid in three tranches into his Zenith Bank, Maitama branch account. He said, however, he got the cash for campaign purposes and that he rendered and accounted for how it was spent.

One EFCC source said: “All attempts by our operatives to locate the whereabouts of Mr Fani-Kayode have failed because he has not only switched off his phones, he has virtually gone underground. We will fish him out wherever he is as having been watch-listed by the EFCC, he cannot hide for long.”

Senator Usman, who was granted administrative bail on health grounds, is expected for more interrogation in Lagos this week. She was said to have refunded N140m of the money she got and signed an undertaking to make more refunds and forfeit two houses to the government.
