Lagos court dissolves marriage after hubby refuses to eat wife's food for the last 13 years

altLAGOS housewife Aduke Mustapha has had her 22-year marriage to her husband dissolved after the Igando Customary Court was told that she frequently tried to poison her spouse in a bid to kill him and inherit his property.

Her husband, Yaya Mustapha, 67, told the court that his wife had frequently tried to kill him and as a result he has not eaten anything she has cooked for the last 13 years. Fashion designer Yaya, also told the court that he had not had sexual intercourse with his wife during the period too as he was afraid she might use it as an opportunity to kill him.

Mr Mustapha said: “My wife had made several attempts to kill me in order to inherit my property but always failed. She once poisoned my food but I sighted the substance when I was about to eat and I called the attention of our neighbours who confirmed it was poisoned and I informed both family members about it.

“For the past 13 years, I stopped eating her food and stopped making love to her because she can also get me through sex. Also, she always pressurised me to sell my property to a strange man and I knew she had a mission.”

Having heard the submissions from both parties, court president Adegboyega Omilola, said he was convinced that the couple could no longer live together. According to him, the husband who is the petitioner in the case insisted on divorce after several interventions.

Mr Omilola said: “The court has no choice than to dissolve the union in spite of the fact that the wife still claims she loves her husband. The court pronounces the marriage between Yaya Mustapha and Aduke Mustapha is dissolved today and both parties henceforth cease to be husband and wife, so they are free to go their separate ways without any harassment or molestation."

Earlier on, Mr Mustapha told the court that Aduke abandoned her religion and converted to Christianity without his consent. He also pointed out that she always went out at will and in the company of men.
