LAGOS commercial bus driver James Obinna is facing the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence after being charged to court for beating his wife into a coma because she refused to bear him more children.
Danfo driver Mr Obinna and his wife Ebere, who is a street hawker, already have three children but the man wanted to have more offspring, to the objection of his wife. Ebere told him that the harsh economic situation currently prevailing in Nigeria does not warrant having many children that they cannot adequately cater for.
However, Mr Obinna, who hails from Enugu State, was said to taken offence at her insistence that they stop having children and pounced on her. He beat her into a coma for having the audacity to challenge him and was subsequently arrested and taken to the Apapa Police Station, from where he was charged to court
Following his arraignment, Magistrate Abolarinwa of the Apapa Magistrate’s Court has remanded him in custody at Kirikiri Prison pending the perfection of his bail conditions. For now, the case has been adjourned until May 11 with Mr Obinna granted bail in the sum of N50,000 (£171.50), with one surety in like sum.
According to the prosecution, Mr Obinna attempted to forcefully have sex with Ebere, who then decided to flee their apartment in the middle of the night. In anger, her husband chased her and held her on the street, forcing her to return to their apartment but she resisted him.
Afterwards, he reportedly descended on her and brutally battered her, throwing her into a gutter leaving her badly bruised and injured. But for the intervention of the residents who rescued the victim and took her to a hospital for treatment, Ebere would have allegedly died.
Concerned residents were said to have called the police who got Mr Obinna arrested. At the station, the police reportedly asked him to apologise to his wife and take care of her medical bill but he stoutly refused.
Subsequently, the police charged him to court with assault and occasional harm. Mr Obinna pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him.
