UK and Australia deport 40 Nigerians as Western nations clampdown on immigrants

BRITAIN and Australia have deported 50 Nigerians for a range of immigration offences and flown them back to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos in a joint operation.

For the second time in a month, both countries deported the males and females, who arrived at the Hajj camp area of the airport on chartered aircraft. Last year, Switzerland also deported some Nigerians in what is now becoming a trend as Western nations clamp down on migrants in response to tough economic conditions.

Yesterday's deportees came on two separate chartered flights. One of the chartered aircraft, with registration number ZTA -4741, arrived Lagos Airport with 36 Nigerians including 29 males and seven females.

An Air Seychelles aircraft, with registration number SND-1, then brought four males into the country for similar immigration offences. Citizens of other African countries, such as Ghana, Liberia and Egypt, were also deported.

Upon arrival. the returnees were received by various agencies at the airport, while officials of Nigerian Immigration Service checked their identities to ascertain their nationalities. One airport source said some of the deportees were violent when immigration officers attempted to take their fingerprints.
