NIGERIA'S next high commissioner to the UK is not going to be a high profile politician in line with the usual convention but a career diplomat after President Muhammadu Buhari submitted a list of 47 nominees to the National Assembly for ratification.
Traditionally, the Nigerian high commissioner to the UK has been a high profile politician who is close to the president and a senior member of the ruling party. Being the largest mission in the world, the UK high commission has always been the main embassy and a conduit through which foreign policy is disseminated.
Consequently, high commissioners have been international figures of stature like Dr Dalhatu Tafida, Prince Bola Ajibola, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji and Dr Christopher Kolade. This time around though, President Buhari appears to be breaking with tradition and has only nominated career diplomats for ambassadorial roles.
In a letter addressed to senate president Bukola Saraki, President Buhari asked the senate to treat the consideration of the ambassadorial nominees with dispatch. Contrary to what had been expected, his list of nominees is made up entirely of only career civil servants in the foreign affairs ministry.
President Buhari said: “I have the honour to forward the attached list of 47 career foreign service officers as ambassador designates for consideration and confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Copies of their curriculum vitae are attached and it is my hope that this would receive the usual prompt attention of the distinguished members of the senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
