NIGER Delta militant leader Government Ekpemupolo popularly known as Tompolo has fled Nigeria and taken refuge in Libya after the security forces declared him a wanted man for refusing to honour a court summons.
Over recent weeks, soldiers have stepped up their hunt for Tompolo after a Lagos high court issued a warrant for his arrest over his involvement in pipeline protection contracts. He has since gone into hiding but the development has sparked a new wave of militancy in the region with a new group known as the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) emerging and blowing up oil installations and pipelines.
After months of playing hide and seek with security forces Tompolo, has finally fled to Libya according to the Joint Niger Delta Liberation Force (JNDLF). A new militant group, which threatened last week to test six missiles in the Niger Delta, the JNDLF added that the military could not locate Tompolo because he has fled Nigeria.
JNDLF leaders General Akotebe Darikoro, its commander of general duties; General Torunanaowei Latei, its creeks network coordinator; General Agbakakuro Owei-Tauro, its pipelines bleeding expert and General Pulokiri Ebiladei the intelligence bureau chief all signed a statement to this effect. They have promised to deal with him for betraying them to the federal government.
“Presently, Tompolo is in Libya and we’ll get him dead or alive for betraying us in supporting the federal government against us. The Nigerian military has a weak intelligence gathering mechanism hence they could not identify our modus operandi as the Nigerian military is only good in carrying AK47s to harass innocent people and raping young girls and women,” the JNDLF leaders said.
Over recent weeks, the Nigerian military has stepped up its presence in the Niger Delta flooding the area with troops as they searched for Tompolo. His village in Delta State was apparently ransacked by soldiers who placed the traditional ruler under house arrest and Tompolo's father was also forced to flee.
