MILITANT group the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) has denied reports that it has entered into an agreement with the federal government about ending its ongoing campaign in the Niger Delta in favour of negotiations.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the NDA agreed to a 30-day truce with the federal government to give President Muhammadu Buhari time to come up with a comprehensive plan for the oil-rich region. This ceasefire was said to have been agreed upon last week by a federal government team led by the minister of state for petroleum Dr Ibe Kachikwu and representatives of the militant groups, community leaders and the state governments.
However, the NDA has denied this, saying it was not party to the agreement entered into by Dr Kachikwu and several Niger Delta militant groups. An NDA spokesman said: “The NDA High Command never remembers having any agreement on ceasefire with the Nigerian government.”
Meanwhile, a new militant group, Ultimate Warriors of the Niger Delta, with alleged alliances to a foreign organisation, yesterday, gave the federal government an ultimatum to commence implementation of portions of the 2014 National Conference, which created a road map for the rapid development of the region or expect a violent change in the next three years. However, the Niger Delta Patriotic Front, said that the purported 30-day ceasefire allegedly brokered with militants in Delta State was a ploy by the NDA and its promoters to deceive President Buhari.
