FULANI herdsmen have been reported to have murdered Evangelical Church of West Africa (Ecwa) clergyman Reverend Zakariya on his farm in Nasarawa State in what has become the latest case of pastoralists killing innocent Nigerians.
Over recent months, Fulani herdsmen have been reported to have carried out numerous attacks across the country, killing members of local communities who have complained about their livestock damaging their crops. Heavily armed with AK47 assault rifles, the herdsmen have been known to sack entire villages, especially in Nigeria's Middle Belt, within which Nasarawa State lies.
In the latest incident, Reverend Zakariya, a father of three university students, was said to have been murdered on his farm by assailants in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. One of his nephews took to Twitter to announce the death, saying the clergyman will be buried on Tuesday.
“My late uncle, Reverend Zakariya was killed Thursday by herdsmen in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. They attacked him on his farm, cut off his arms and legs and then they chopped his head with machete.
"I received a call on Thursday evening that my uncle, a pastor with Ecwa was killed by Fulani herdsmen. All I want is justice to be done, so the Nasarawa State and the federal government must find the killers of my uncle," the nephew added.
He called on Nasarawa State governor, Tanko Al-Makura, to find the killers of his uncle. Late Reverend Zakariya’s nephew also lamented the fact that relevant security agencies were not doing enough to protect innocent citizens from violent attacks by suspected herdsmen.
“We have become preys that are hunted by marauding beasts in our land, so I will keep shouting till justice is done. For how long will we suffer? He has left a very young family as three of his children are currently in the university and no one is saying anything about the clandestine killings by Fulani herdsmen happening almost every day,” he added.
