Katsina elite bloat civil service payroll by including their wives and children as employees

altKATSINA State governor Aminu Masari has revealed that the verification of local government staff and primary school teachers has shown that numerous politicians across the state registered members of their families on the civil service payroll.

Like many states in Nigeria, Katsina is currently going through a verification exercise to find out who are genuine members of its civil service and who are ghost workers. At the moment, the state government is conducting such an exercise and has uncovered widespread fraud with the elite bloating the payroll with members of their families.

Governor Masari said: "The ongoing screening of local government staff is done in good faith, we want to have genuine number of staff on the councils’ payrolls. During the sample screening in nine councils, we discovered that some prominent people placed their wives and children in the payrolls, which is unfortunate."

He added that the councils’ federation account allocation has gone down in the past five months and now the state government supports the 34 local government areas with over N1.2bn, just to settle their salaries. Governor Masari said that few individuals mismanaged the little revenue the councils generated monthly.
