NCAA suspends three pilots for being drunk in duty in bid to improve airline safety

altTHREE pilots have been suspended by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for taking alcohol before operating their flights as part of a clamp down on irresponsible practices and a move to improve health and safety.

Over recent years, safety has been a major problem in the aviation industry and the authorities have had to introduce new measures to provide better security. Part of this has involved the NCAA improving the training and vetting of pilots and ensuring that they meet global safety standards.

As part of this drive, the NCAA suspended the three pilots and has insisted that they undergo psychiatric evaluation before rejoining the service. NCAA acting general manager of public relations, Sam Adurogboye, said they had withdrawn the licenses of the trio and placed them on a three-month suspension for breaching civil aviation regulations in the country.

According to the rules, a pilot is prohibited from taking alcohol for at least three hours before flight time. Mr Adurogboye noted that such acts could compromise the safety of their passengers, adding that the NCAA was very vigilant in ensuring strict compliance to safety rules.

“They are to be off duty for three months. While on suspension, they are to be made to go through psychiatric evaluation before rejoining the service,” he said.

Furthermore, Mr Adurogboye, advised all airline operators and pilots to abide by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, stressing that offenders would be visited with severe penalties. He did not mention the airlines which the three pilots were working for.
