NIGERIAN Football Federation (NFF) officials have decided to name local coach Salisu Yusuf as the new Super Eagles manager after Frenchman Pail Le Guen rejected their offer because he was not willing to relocate to Nigeria.
Earlier this week, the NFF's technical and development committee recommended Mr Le Guen to the executive body as the man to be named as the Eagles head coach. He was to be paid a monthly salary of $40,000 a month with Mt Yusuf named as his assistant on a monthly wage of $5,000.
However, Mr Le Guen has rejected the4 offer as the contract stipulated that he must live in Nigeria and must help contribute to the development of the game locally. He had wanted to live in France and only visit Nigeria ahead of matches where he could train with the team but the NFF found this unacceptable.
Having been faced with the embarrassment of the rejection, the NFF has decided to act swiftly and name Mr Yusuf as coach. He will now be in charge of managing the team as the 2018 World Cup qualifiers begin.
Following the appointment, Mr Yusuf will combine his Super Eagles job with that of the home-based Eagles, while Imama Amakapabo would serve as assistant coach and Alloy Agu as goalkeepers’ trainer. In addition, the NFF has also approved the recommendation that Bitrus Bewarang replace late Coach Shaibu Amodu as the new national technical director
It further approved the recommendation for Nduka Ugbade to return to the U-17 national team as assistant coach and mandated all sub-committees to henceforth submit reports of their activities to NFF board through the general-secretary. Only the head coaches of the various national teams will be on a monthly salary, while assistant coaches will only receive bonuses and allowances.
