US government says it has no information linking Buhari's wife with Halliburton scandal

altAMERICAN government officials have dismissed suggestions that President Muhammadu Buhari's wife Aisha was involved in any misdemeanour in the US saying that there is no record of her being involved in any crime.

Last month, it had been alleged that Hadjia Aisha Buhari was involved in the Halliburton bribery scandal in which Nigerian government officials were bribed by US officials to obtain contracts. Presidency officials have vehemently denied the allegations, saying that if any Aisha was involved it was not the president's wife.

Now the US government has come out to deny the allegations too, with Frank Sellin, the acting public affairs officer of the US consulate in Lagos, saying there is no information on record about it. He denied that the president’s wife was wanted in the US and was avoiding travelling to the country.

Last month, Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, had alleged that Hadjia Buhari was involved in the $185m Halliburton scandal. While reacting to the freezing of his Zenith Bank accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Governor Fayose claimed that the wife of the president was a wanted person in the US.

“Even the president cannot claim to be an angel as the estate he built in Abuja is known to us. His wife was indicted in the Halliburton scandal as when that American, Jefferson, was being sentenced, the president’s wife was mentioned as having wired $170,000 to him.

"Her name was on page 25 of the sentencing of Jefferson. We can serialise the judgment for people to see and read,” Governor Fayose added.

He later repeated the claim in a statement issued by his chief press secretary Idowu Adelusi. Governor Fayose said Aisha refused to travel with the president to the US because of her involvement in the scandal.
