ASSISTANT inspector general (AIG) of police Abdulmajid Ali has ordered that mental tests be carried out on policemen under his command as part of a drive to improve professionalism within the force.
Traditionally, Nigerian policemen have been regarded with disdain and contempt by many members of the public because of regular unruly behaviour. Badly trained and poorly equipped, many of the men of the Nigeria Police Force have been known to act unprofessionally, extort money from members of the public and even engage in armed robbery.
In a bid to change this image of the police and bring policing up to international standards, Assistant Inspector General Ali, in charge of Zone Two Command, Onikan, Lagos, is introducing a new regime. Under the scheme, he has also ordered drunkenness test on all personnel of the command, said the move was necessary in order to avoid any accidental discharge or extrajudicial killing.
Police spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, said AIG Ali spoke during a newly introduced educative session for officers and men of the zonal command at Onikan in Lagos. He added that the session was meant to impart principles of modern policing and injecting learning and reading culture towards having people-oriented policemen.
Mr Adejobi said: “The police boss reiterated his zero tolerance for corruption, excessive use of force, dirtiness, incivility to the public, drunkenness and unethical conducts that can damage the image of the Nigeria Police Force. He seized the opportunity to challenge policemen to read and imbibe the spirit of love to all and sundry they come in contact with."
In addition, the AIG mandated the police medical unit to carry out drunkenness and mental checks on men, particularly those on operations, of the command to avoid any accidental discharge of extrajudicial killings. Health management teams from the Police Medical Department and selected health institutions later lectured policemen on the need for regular checkups to avoid sudden deaths.
