HUNDREDS of Nigerians gathered for the first ever Actors Guild of UK Nollywood Awards summer ball in central London over the weekend to honour Nigerian actors and actresses who have excelled in the industry.
Held at the Holiday Inn in Coram Street off Bloomsbury, the event attracted dignitaries from across the industry and the high commission was represented by Mrs Olufolake Abdulrasaq, the minister for consular, education and welfare at the high commission. At the occasion recognition awards were given out to the guild's matrons and patrons as well as to its members.
Guild president Theodora Oyebade, said: The Nollywood industry is the third largest movie industry in the world and has become a brand which Africans worldwide like to be associated with. Consequently, the Actors Guild of UK Nollywood is open to particularly to all persons of African descent who want to be associated with the industry."
Mrs Abdulrasaq added that the high commission would continue to support Nollywood and the Nigerian film industry as it was a major revenue earner for the country. She pointed out that among other things, it proffers prestige on Nigeria as all Africans want to watch Nigerian movies and films.
Among the guild matrons who were honoured at the classy dinner on the night include June Douglas, Pauline Long, Golda Abiola and Mrs Abdulrasaq herself. Patrons who were decorated include Bimbo Afolayan, John Emore, Alfred Soroh, Sympathy Nwosu, Charles Sylvester and Mike Abiola.
