Kano police seal ex-governor Rabiu Kwankwaso's house to forestall mass wedding

altDETECTIVES from the Kano State Police Command have sealed off the residence of former governor Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso after reports that a mass wedding involving hundreds of couples was being planned there.

 

Now a senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District, Senator Kwankwaso was governor between 1999 and 2003. During his time in office, Senator Kwankwaso organised several mass wedding across the state to clamp down on prostitution and to eliminate the problems of large numbers of single women.

 

At the moment, the Senator Kwankwaso's residence also serves as headquarters of Kwankwasiyya, the group loyal to the former governor. Kano State Police Commissioner Rabiu Yusuf, said the action to seal off the house was taken following an intelligence report that there was a plan to conduct a mass wedding there.

 

He added: “We have directed our men to seal the residence because of an intelligence report that there is a plan to conduct a mass wedding in the house. Police has banned the two ceremonies indefinitely as security intelligence at our disposal revealed that some disgruntled elements are preparing to use the occasions to cause havoc in the state."

 

Armed policemen were deployed to the area and kept vigil at the house, while turning back motorists plying the road. On August 18, Kano police had banned a mass wedding organised by Kwankwasiyya.
