Lack of funding threatens Nigeria's participation in forthcoming Paralympic Games

altNIGERIA'S participation in the forthcoming Paralympic Games taking place in Brazil between September 7 and 18 looks to be in doubt as the athletes have not got any word from the government regarding funding.

Traditionally, Nigeria has always done well in Paralympic Games and won six gold, five silver and two bronze medals at London 2012 event. Expecting to build on that success, the team have been waiting for funding to begin preparing to leave for Brazil but so far have not got any word from the government.

One athlete said:  “I don’t have any idea when we are leaving for Rio. We haven’t heard anything concerning fund from the sports ministry but we have tentatively fixed our departure for August 31.

So far, the athletes who have been in camp throughout this month, have not received any allowance and have moaned about the poor diet they have been offered. However, Nigerian Paralympic Committee president and former Paralympian, Monday Emoghavwe assured that the country will still do well despite the slow moving nature of preparations.

“This present Paralympics preparation is full of challenges as a result of Nigeria’s economic meltdown but we will try our best to do the country proud. We have never disappointed before and we will not disappoint in Brazil," he added.
