HOPES of ending Nigeria's ongoing communal violence involving Fulani cattle herdsmen and local farming communities have risen after a leading herder surrendered his arms to the Nigerian Army in Zamfara State.
Over recent years, heavily-armed Fulani herdsmen have been involved in bloody clashes with local communities across the country. President Buhari has asked the security forces to take the matter seriously but so far, no solution has been found to the crisis.
Yesterday, Alhaji Ruwa, a Fulani leader in Zamfara State voluntarily surrendered his ammunition to troops of the 223 Battalion of the First Mechanised Brigade of the Nigerian Army. Alhaji Ruwa also promised to ensure that his subjects do same soonest.
He handed over two locally fabricated pistols and three Dane guns to the army. Col Sani Usman, the acting director of army public relations, also promised to persuade all other known armed bandits to come out and renounce their illegal vocation.
