Over recent years, Mikel, 29 has been linked with a move away from Chelsea and there have been several offers for his services from across Europe. Last season, however, Mikel was restored to the Chelsea starting line-up buy interim coach Gus Hiddink and it appeared that he would end his career at the club.
However, new coach Antonio Conte has just taken over as Chelsea manager and has made Leicester City and France midfielder Ngolo Kante one of his first signings. With the arrival of Kante, Mikel's position is under threat and with him going away with Nigeria to the Olympic Games, he miss the first few matches of the season.
However, Mikel said: “I am definitely staying at Chelsea and I will try to give my best to the club, like I have always done. I want to help the team fight for every point, win and trophies and I also want to help the team qualify for the Champions League again.
“For 10 years I have been going to the same training ground and locker room and it is an amazing club, with an amazing owner. I have a year left and then we will see what happens as if I play well this season, it will help me earn a new contract."
Adding that he will continue to give 120% every time he is on the pitch or come off the bench, Mikel said he will always give his best. He added that if Chelsea wants to talk about a new contract, he is willing to listen, pointing out that if he has to move on, there will be plenty of clubs out there where he can continue his career.
Mikel, who will miss the start of the new Premier League season, is hoping to make his first Olympic appearance at the 2016 Olympics men’s football event after being selected as one of the Nigeria’s two designated over-23 players. Mikel has been named the captain of the Team Nigeria contingent to the Rio Olympics.
