In 2014, GSS Chibok became internationally famous after terrorist sect Boko Haram stormed it and abducted over 200 of its pupils. Before leaving, Boko Haram destroyed many of the school's buildings and ever since them, it has been shit as the fear of the terrorists returning had scared pupils away.
Over recent months, however, the Nigerian Army has enjoyed significant success in regaining territory from Boko Haram, driving the sect out of many of its strongholds. As a result of this, the Nigerian Army Engineering Corp has been able to focus on rebuilding many of the facilities destroyed by Boko Haram.
Brigadier Victor Ezugwu, the general officer commanding the Seventh Division of the Nigerian Army, said the army took over the supervision of the reconstruction of the school after a directive from the presidency, progress had been swift. He added that the engineers had been on site for some time trying to ensure the reconstruction of the school.
“The school has become a national monument of a sort following the April 14, 2014 abduction of about 217 girls by terrorists at the institution. There was actually a presidential order asking army engineers to take over the reconstruction of the school, which led to the chief of army staff giving directives for us to move in.
“We are trying to rebuild the entire structures by supervising contractors on site. Our target is that we shall be able to get some buildings ready before the commencement of the next academic session so that the school will be able to pick up again because of the total destruction it suffered in the hands of terrorists," Brigadier Ezugwu said.
He added that the Nigerian army was also working toward the take off of a Command Day Secondary School in the state. According to Brigadier Ezugwu, the state government is renovating the buildings of the former Government Secondary School Auno, for the take off of the Command Day Secondary School.
