EMBATTLED Boko Haram leader Sheikh Abubakar Shekau has resurfaced in a new Youtube video posted yesterday dismissing suggestions that he had been killed in a Nigerian Air Force (Naf) airstrike.
In August 23, military commanders said they believe Sheikh Shekau may have been fatally wounded or even killed in a Naf strike on his camp in Borno State. Nigerian Army spokesman Col Sani Usman, said the strikes took place while Shekau was praying on Friday at Taye village in Sambisa Forest.
In the past, Nigerian security forces have on at least three occasions declared that they have killed or fatally wounded Sheikh Shekau, only to have him resurface in video and audio recordings. It appears that this is the case again as Sheikh Shekau has once more resurfaced in a 40-minute video rubbishing claims that he was killed or injured.
Sheikh Shekau said: “You have been spreading in the social media that you injured or killed me, Oh tyrants, I’m in a happy state, in good health and in safety.”
Last month's the army’s claim that Sheikh Shekau was killed was bolstered when Boko Haram released a video on September 13 without him in it. That video, also posted on YouTube, shows an unidentified man who says he is representing Sheikh Shekau, who had allegedly been ousted by the Islamic State group to which Boko Haram pledged allegiance in March 2015.
