GOVERNORS from across Igboland have been urged by the southeastern chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (Can) to take firmer action against Fulani cattle herdsmen who carry out bloody attacks across the region.
Last month, Fulani cattle herdsmen invaded Ndiagu Attakwu Akegbe-Ugwu community in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State killing Catholic seminarian Lazarus Okafor. This followed on from a similar brutal attack on April 25 during which herdsmen raided Nimbo community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of the state, killing dozens.
Exasperated with the lack of action, Can has asked the five governors in the geo-political zone to take more pragmatic steps in ensuring that the reported killings come to an end. After a closed door meeting in Owerri, Can said the activities of the herdsmen in the zone was not acceptable and should be checked.
Nnabugwu Oluchukwu, the secretary of Can's southeast chapter, said: “We plead that the governors of the southeast states should react to this ugly development as the Fulani herdsmen are continuously harassing rural communities in their states. We have had the attacks by Fulani herdsmen in Ndiagu Attaukwu village in Akagbe Ukwu community, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu state and recently in Akokwa in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State.
"This is indeed very sad and unpatriotic. It is wrong to hear that herdsmen are now moving round the country with dangerous weapons to the point of invading rural communities, destroying their farmlands and their economic crops especially in this time of hardship, a situation which can affect the productivity of the people and further push them to extreme poverty."
Can also called on the federal government led by President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that the herdsmen said to be committing these atrocities are arrested and at the same time prosecuted in order to serve as a deterrent to others who have similar intentions. Armed to the teeth with AK47 assault rifles, Fulani cattle herdsmen have carried out numerous bloody attacks across Nigeria of late.
