High salaries and allowances of political appointees undermine Buhari's spending cutbacks

altSENIOR political office holders including President Muhammadu Buhari and the members of his cabinet received a total of N2.3bn (£5.5m) in salaries and allowances over the last year in a development which negates attempts to control to cost of governance.

Since assuming office last may, President Buhari has fought to limit the cost of government and cut many of the perks associated with being in office. However, according to a recent report published by Economic Confidential, this campaign is being undermined by the high wages and hefty allowances the president, vice president, ministers and political appointees receive.

In the report, which showed the official remunerations of the president, vice-president, cabinet ministers, secretary to the government of the federation and the head of service of the federation among other chief executives, the figures were shown to be high. Although they were approved by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, the packages included annual salaries, accommodation, vehicle maintenance/fuel, personal assistants, house maintenance, domestic staff, entertainment and utilities allowances.

Other allowances included constituency allowances, hardship allowances, newspapers and monitoring allowances. A critical examination of the report indicated that President Buhari has an annual basic salary of N3.51m, with the vice-president earning N3.03m, while ministers, the secretary to the government, the head of service and chairmen of boards of statutory agencies get N2.02m each.

Members of constitutional bodies, special advisers, speech writers, directors-general, the accountant-general of the federation, permanent secretaries, chief executives of agencies and resident electoral commissioners each get an annual basic salary of N1.9m. Political appointees including ministers, advisers, permanent secretaries and resident commissioners are entitled to 200% of their annual basic salary for accommodation, 300% for furniture, 75% for vehicle maintenance and fuel, 25% for personal assistants, 75% for domestic staff, 45% for entertainment, 30% for utilities, 15% for newspapers, and 20% for monitoring.
