PORT Harcourt father facing trial in the Rivers State capital for allegedly raping his 17-year-old daughter attempted to commit suicide in court yesterday by grabbing a tile and attempting to stab himself.
Mr I Franklyn, 38, is standing trial at the Rivers State judiciary complex in Port Harcourt and faced with the shame of it, attempted killing himself. During the trial, the accused suddenly grabbed one piece of tile among the ones brought to court as exhibits and stabbed himself.
He made the attempt on his life after Chief Magistrate F Amanze, adjourned his case to December 23 for mention and ordered that he be remanded in custody at the Port Harcourt prison. Chief Magistrate Amanze also referred the case file to the director of public prosecutions for further action.
One prison official said that the accused allegedly raped his daughter on September 23 in Okujagu community, in Port Harcourt City Local Government and chained the little girl in the house, until she was rescued by neighbours. He was subsequently arrested by the police and charged to court.
