Sallah massacre prevented in Borno as troops shoot female suicide bomber dead in Dikwa

altSOLDIERS serving with Nigeria's Seventh Mechanised Division in Borno State have thwarted a Sallah massacre by shooting a female suicide bomber in Dikwa deployed to attack shoppers buying livestock to celebrate the Eid el Kabir festivities.

In the run-up to the festivities, security agents had warned Muslim worshippers to be watchful at prayer grounds as terrorist groups like Boko Haram planned to use the occasion to detonate bombs. Troops and other security agencies have since been put on a state of high alert to prevent any incident of bombing.

Yesterday, a female suicide bomber who attempted to attack a cattle market in Borno state where scores of Muslims had converged for shopping was gunned down by troops serving with the Operation Lafiya Dole, launched to finish off Boko Haram. Apparently, she was carrying an improved explosive device underneath her clothing, with plans to detonate it.

Nigerian Army spokesman Col Sani Usman, said: “On the evening of Sunday September 11, a suspected female suicide bomber was seen approaching a troop checkpoint located at Kara Cattle Market axis, Dikwa, towards Antul and Mukdala in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State. She was challenged from afar by the vigilant duty sentry but refused to stop claiming to be coming from Monguno to see her parents in Dikwa.

“Troops sensing the direction of approach was suspicious and abnormal, fired a shot at her and the gallant sentry was proven right as she was carrying a person borne improvised explosive device, which exploded with a loud bang, killing her instantly. The explosive also caused minor injuries to two soldiers and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force assisting them."

He added that the injured soldiers and the civilian have been treated and have continued with their duties. According to Col Usman, this incident shows that there are a few of the remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists that are determined to carry out criminal acts to create panic and insecurity in some areas.
