PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his views that his wife Hadjia Aisha Buhari’s place is in the kitchen and looking after him rather than dabbling into politics by expressing partisan views.
Last week, Hadjia Buhari told the BBC Hausa Service that her husband was losing his focus as he was appointing people who were not with him into his government and was not meeting the aspirations of the 15m voters who voted him into office. Away in Germany at the time, President Buhari responded jokingly that his wife belongs in his kitchen, living room and bedroom and was not a member of any political party.
His comments have attracted a lot of criticism from those who view his comments as sexist but President Buhari has reiterated that his wife should steer clear of politics. Yesterday, the president repeated his earlier stance when he was asked before his departure from Germany by a reporter from the German Radio, Deutsche Welle, that his wife’s place was in the kitchen.
President Buhari said: “I am sure you have a house and you know where your kitchen is. You know where your living room is and I believe your wife looks after all that even if she’s working.”
Garba Shehu, President Buhari's spokesman, added: “My friends, can’t a leader have a sense of humour anymore? Mr. President laughed before that statement was made.”
Hadjia Buhari who was expressing the frustrations of several party loyalists, also said she might not back her husband’s re-election bid in 2019 except he shakes up his cabinet. President Buhari's opponents have praised the intervention of Hadjia Buhari, adding that her husband should listen to his wife's view.
