FORMER speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Senator Olurunnimbe Mamora appears to be the frontrunner to become the next Nigerian high commissioner to the UK after his name was included on a list President Muhammadu Buhari sent to the senate.
Earlier today, President Buhari forwarded the names of 44 political nominees to the senate for ratification for ambassadorial appointments. They are in addition to a list of 47 career diplomats whose names were sent to the senate for screening earlier this year.
Already, the senate has screened the career diplomats and they are awaiting their appointments but it now appears that the presidency is waiting for the list of politicians to be approved too before announcing the appointments.
Among the names submitted to the senate president Bukola Saraki by the presidency are the likes of Usman Bugaje, Yusuf Tugar, Musa Ibeto, Senator Olorunimbe Mamora, Nurudeen Mohammed, Jamila Ahmadu-Suka, Suleiman Hassan and Pauline Tallen. Senator Mamora, 63, is a medical doctor, who after serving as the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, became the senator representing Lagos East from 2007 to 2011.
He later stood down for Senator Oluremi Tinubu but has since remained an All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart. Senator Mamora remains an influential member of the APC, however, and is close to President Buhari and former Lagos State governor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
Being the largest Nigerian mission on the world, the UK high commission has traditionally be headed by a high profile politician with close access to the president. Past high commissioners like Dr Dalhatu Tafida, Prince Bolaji Ajibola, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji and Christopher Kolade have all had direct access to the president.
Currently, the UK mission is being headed by acting high commissioner Simon Ogah, a career diplomat. Like many Nigerian missions, the UK high commission has been waiting patiently for a substantive high commissioner since President Buhari assumed office last year.
