House of Reps members throw their weight behind Hadjia Buhari praising her courage

SOME members of the House of Representatives have thrown their weight behind Hadjia Aisha Buhari for her bravery in speaking out on the state of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration of her husband.

Last week, Hadjia Buhari told the BBC Hausa Service that her husband was losing his focus as he was appointing people who were not with him into his government and was not meeting the aspirations of the 15m voters who got him into office. Away in Germany at the time, President Muhammadu Buhari responded jokingly that his wife belongs in his kitchen, living room and bedroom and was not a member of any political party.

Critics have been lining up to attack Hadjia Buhari over her comments, while the president too has been under attack over what have been described as sexist comments. Several lawmakers, however, have advised President Buhari to listen to his wife’s counsel and use it to better his administration.

Hon Timothy Golu, the chairman of the House Committee on Legislative Budget, said Hadjia Buhari was closer to  her husband than any other person and as such, understood him better. He called on President Buhari to listen to the words of his wife, who was advising him against the cabal currently surrounding him.

Hon Golu said: “She’s drawing her husband's attention to issues that sycophants around him would not tell him but she has come out with the truth and is saying it because she loves the husband. She is closer to the man more than any other person and since she has voiced this out, the husband should take it and review some of his actions and decisions.

“It will not be good for the president to ignore the complaints from the wife. She has been with him and is disturbed by certain things happening around the husband, so it’s natural for her to talk.”

Speaking almost in the same vein, Hon Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma, representing Egor/Ikpoba Okha federal constituency, said the first lady’s interview had vindicated most of them who had continuously maintained that the president had been hijacked by a cabal. He called on Nigerian women to rally round the first lady and support her.

Hon Agbonayinma said Hadjia Buhari was mounting a campaign to save Nigeria from the hands of a few selfish individuals. He also noted that the first lady must have swallowed her worry for long and had decided to speak out in frustration.
