PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari's government has been accused of using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to freeze former president Goodluck Jonathan's bank accounts under the guise of investigation.
Since assuming office last year, President Buhari has been made the fight against corruption his main priority and several of Dr Jonathan's associates have been arrested and prosecuted. Dame Patience Jonathan, the former president's wife has also had her account with Skye Bank frozen.
Yesterday, Udengs Eradiri, the president of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), has alleged that the federal government is plotting to freeze bank accounts belonging to Dr Jonathan. He added that information at his disposal indicated that the EFCC has frozen Dr Jonathan’s account under the guise of investigation.
Mr Eradiri warned that the federal government should not push to Niger Delta people and the rest of Nigerians to revolt with the harassment of their leaders. He added that what is being done to the wife is to prepare the ground to finally move against Dr Jonathan.
“I can tell you that Jonathan’s account has been frozen by the EFCC. Nigerians don’t know this because the man does not talk but what is our offence as Niger Delta people? Is it a crime to lose election?
“Because of national interest, Jonathan conceded defeat, yet, they won’t allow him to be. Niger Delta people are being hounded. After the election, we congratulated him and advised him to be father of all but it seems he is not interested," Mr Eradiri added.
According to Mr Eradiri, Dr Jonathan’s security befitting that of a former president has been withdrawn and his allowances have not been paid. He added that across the south-south, all projects have been abandoned because they did not vote for President Buhari.
