Lagos mob attempts to lynch policeman who stabs local motor park tout to death

ANGRY residents in the Ojota area of Lagos State beat up an off-duty policeman who reportedly stabbed a motor park tout identified as Ahmed to death in an altercation near the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway toll gate.

Pandemonium erupted over the weekend at Berger Bus Stop after a policeman, who was a passenger on a 14-seater bus end route from Ibadan, reportedly stabbed Ahmed to death. Ahmed and was reportedly planning to marry in December and the policeman was said to be serving in a command  outside Lagos.

Apparently, one of Ahmed’s friends had stopped the bus with the inscription, Success Express and demanded N100 from the driver, who reportedly declined to pay the money. In the ensuing argument between the driver and Ahmed, the policeman, who was in the front seat, reportedly got out of the bus, at which point the deceased went to the scene to know what was happening.

One eyewitness said: “The policeman suddenly brought out a very sharp knife and stabbed him in the stomach. He held the policeman for a while and then slumped.

"He stood up, staggered and then slumped again. The policeman put on  trousers usually worn by riot policemen.”

Ahmed was said to have been taken in the bus to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre at the Ojota Tollgate, where he was confirmed dead on arrival. One of his friends who identified himself as Agberoko, said men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) at the bus stop released tear gas canisters to rescue the killer cop.

He added: “The RRS men shot into the air and also fired tear gas canisters to disperse us when we intercepted the policeman. They rescued and took him into the armoured personnel carrier (APC) stationed in the area.”

According to other eyewitnesses, it was after Ahmed’s corpse was brought back to the bus stop that his friends got violent and vandalised the bus. In a temper, the angry mob also hurled stones at the RRS’ APC as the operatives drove off from the scene.

Local trader Taibat Adejare, said Ahmed was decent among his counterparts. She added that he was a very peaceful and jovial who did not force drivers to pay, claiming the policeman stabbed him with a poisonous knife.

Lagos State Police Command spokeswoman Dolapo Badmos, said, however, that the suspect was not a policeman. She added that he has been arrested and the corpse had been deposited in a morgue.
