LOCAL villagers in Godogodo community in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State have hit back at marauding Fulani cattle herdsmen killing 20 of them in response to an attack over the weekend that left dozens dead.
Between last Saturday and Sunday, Fulani herdsmen apparently attacked Godogodo killing at least 20 people according to the Southern Kaduna Peoples Unions (Sokapu), the umbrella body of the 67 tribal groupings of tghe Southern Kaduna area. Kaduna State Police Command spokesman, Usman Aliyu, confirmed the attack but said he could not confirm that 20 Fulanis have been killed in reprisal killings.
Commercial bus driver Adamu Aliyu who witnessed the attack, said: “I was returning from Plateau State with eight passengers, all of them Fulani herders. My bus broke down in Kaduna State, so I left it to go search for a mechanic.
“While I was away, a mob surrounded the vehicle and forcibly brought out the eight passengers. They hacked them to death, dumped them in the vehicle and set it ablaze, while another vehicle was also attacked, when it stopped to refuel and all the six people were burnt to death along with the car.”
He added that a riot broke out in the streets, with soldiers and policemen finally intervening to contain the carnage. Sokapu leader Dr Musa Solomon, called on the federal and Kaduna State government to set up permanent security formations in the area to curtail what he described as the senseless killings.
Apparently, some of the retrieved corpses that were discovered after the initial Fulani attack that were so badly burnt that it was hard to know if they were male or female. Searches are still ongoing for more bodies.
