Sambo Dasuki's lawyers intend to call Goodluck as a witness at his corruption trial

Sambo Dasuk 28ii29iFORMER president Dr Goodluck Jonathan will be called as a witness in the ongoing corruption trial of his national security adviser Col Sambo Dasuki who is facing charges of misappropriating $2.1bn earmarked for the purchase of military hardware.

In one of the biggest corruption scandals of the Jonathan era, Col Dasuki is charged with presiding over the distribution of the money which was earmarked to  purchase weapons to fight Boko Haram. Maintaining his innocence all along, Col Dasuki has claimed that he was only following instructions issued to him by Dr Jonathan.

It appears that to prove his innocence, Col Dasuki now intends to ask his lawyers to produce Dr Jonathan as a witness during his trial. Col Dasuki's defence counsel to Ahmed Raji, said Dr Jonathan’s appearance as a witness in court will throw more light into grey areas.

Mr Raji added: “It will be desirable for Jonathan to testify for the ex-national security adviser as it will throw greater light into grey areas and it will serve the interest of justice. It will be fantastic for him to go to court to testify as Dasuki is an agent of a disclosed and known principal.

"But, frankly speaking, I pray for a political solution to the problem because of the characters involved. Both the accused and the government should embrace a political solution to the problem, as with a political solution, Mr President will be in good stead to overcome unnecessary distractions in order to succeed."
