About 90% of Nigerians across the US expected to vote for Hillary Clinton today

NIGERIANS across the US look set to vote en masse for the Democratic Party candidate Hilary Clinton in today's presidential election according to Michael Adeniyi the former president of the Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN).

Today, Americans go to the polls in what will be a historic election that will see a woman stand a real chance of becoming president for the first time in the country's history. Mrs Clinton is up against Republican Donald Trump, a political outsider, who has based his campaign on the fact that he is a businessman and not a career politician.

Controversial Mr Trump has courted controversy with his comments about migrants, women and ethnic minorities, which is believed to have driven Nigerians in the US to opt for Mrs Clinton. Mr Adeniyi, the former leader of community group OAN, said Nigeria and Africa should expect to benefit a lot from a Clinton’s presidency, considering her involvement with issues that concern the continent.

Mr Adeniyi added: “We have a lot of Nigerians who are Republicans and who support Trump but the majority of Nigerians support Clinton. Most Nigerians in the northeast states like New York, New Jersey, California, among others, support Clinton and I see Clinton winning.

“I think she is qualified for the job, being an experienced wife of a former governor and wife of the president when her husband was president and she was actually involved. She was a senator and secretary of state, so she has learnt the ropes and you can’t compare her against someone who is not experienced."

He added that as secretary of state, Mrs Clinton visited many countries in Africa and understands what goes on in the continent and in her capacity, dealt with those issues. According to Mr Adeniyi, one cannot compare her with somebody who does not have any affiliation with Africa like Mr Trump.

He pointed out that the only link he thinks the Republican candidate has with Africa was when his sons went for shooting game on the continent. Professor Olusoji Akomolafe, a professor of political science at the Norfolk State University, said that he believes Mrs Clinton would win.

Professor Yetunde Odugbesan-Omede, a professor of global affairs and political science, at Rutgers University and Farmingdale State College, added:  “Nigerians in diaspora and Africans will be voting for Clinton. We have some minorities who will vote for Trump but over 90% majority will vote for Clinton.

“We have over 3m Africans in diaspora who have pledged to vote for Clinton who is projected to win 322 electoral college votes."

According to Professor Odugbesan-Omede, Nigerians and Africans in general had more to benefit from Clinton than from Trump. She added that Trump’s stance on migration, how he feels about African, Latinos, Muslims and other minority is bad.
