Cameroon football federation urges Lions to beat Eagles home and away in qualifiers

CAMEROON'S football federation has challenged its national the Indomitable Lions to go out and beat the Super Eagles at home and away in next year's World Cup qualifiers as it is the only way they can qualify for Russia 2018.

Along with Algeria and Zambia, Cameroon and Nigeria are drawn in the so-called Group of Death, seeking one ticket for the 2018 World Cup. After two matched, Nigeria has taken a commanding lead of the group, winning away 2-1 in Zambia and defeating Algeria 3-1 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo over the weekend.

Nigeria currently has six points but Cameroon only has two after draws away to Algeria and at home to Zambia. On August 28 next year, Cameroon will visit Uyo and on September 2, the Eagles will travel to Limbe face Les Lions Indomitable in what will be two do-or-die games.

Four points from those games will almost seal qualification for Nigeria, so the Cameroonian federation Fecafoot, has urged les Lions to do they can to win both matches. Fecafoot urged the Lions who barely escaped  defeat against Zambia last weekend to maintain a positive attitude.

One Fecafoot official said: “In order to maintain a positive record on the performances of our national team, only one goal is needed and win both matches against Nigeria. Despite the timorous performance against Zambia, senior Lions are fully aware of the issues and their determination will lead them to victory.”

Coach Hugo Broos added : “Before this match, we already knew that the matches against Nigeria will be decisive. We will have to win to have another chance to go to the World Cup and we have eight months to prepare.”

Meanwhile, Algerian captain Carl Medjani has said he believes his team could still qualify for the 2018 World Cup at the expense of Nigeria. Algeria face Zambia in Ndola in August and welcome the Chipolopolo or Copper Bullets to Algiers a few days later.

“We can still qualify for the World Cup. We need to win our remaining four matches and hope the Super Eagles lose a game before their final match in Algeria.

“One thing is for sure, we have not been eliminated. It will be difficult to qualify for the World Cup but nothing has been decided yet,"  Medjani added.
