Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Matthew Kukah visits Fani-Kayode and Obanikoro at EFCC

CATHOLIC bishop of Sokoto Diocese Mathew Kukah paid a visit to detained ministers Chief Femi Fani-Kayode and Senator Musiliu Obanikoro at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja yesterday.

In an unprecedented move, the leading clergyman decided to check up on both men following reports that they were in ill health. Both of them are being held in connection with corruption charges while they were in office and Chief Fani-Kayode's spokesmen have claimed that he is unwell and being maltreated.

Yesterday, however, Bishop Kukah met with both men, as well as former president Dr Goodluck Jonathan's spokesman Reuben Abati, who are all being held pending their arraignment in court. EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren, said that Bishop Kukah was conducted round the detention facilities by the acting chairman of the commission Ibrahim Magu.

He added that Bishop Kukah expressed delight that the detainees were in high spirits despite the discomfort of temporary restriction. Following his visit, Bishop Kukah commended the commission over the state of its detention facilities in Abuja, describing them as clean and orderly.

Bishop Kukah said: ”I discussed with some detained suspects like Femi Fani-Kayode, Musiliu Obanikoro and Reuben Abati and I am quite pleased they are looking cheerful. I was also happy with the humility of the acting chairman who took me round and the way he interacted with the detainees.

”This is what is important for our country so that nobody takes these kinds of things personal, so I am happy I came. This country has suffered so much but we hope and pray that we can bring the suffering and trauma to an end as we collectively fight corruption.”

Mr Magu assured the detainees that their incarceration was not personal. He added that it is all about Nigeria and making it better and there is a consensus around this.
