Lagos State Police Command arrests 17 men for collecting bribes and acts of misconduct

DETECTIVES from the Lagos State Police Command have arrested 17 policemen for acts of misconduct including taking bribes and have put them on orderly room trial with the prospect of demotion and dismissal.

 

As part of a programme to clean up the police force, the policemen, who were arrested between October 6 and 28 on the orders of the Lagos State police commissioner Fatai Owoseni. Confirming the development, Mr Owoseni called on residents of the state not to hesitate to report erring officers to the command.

 

Mr Owoseni said, “A total number of 17 policemen were arrested in different areas of the state for misconduct. The necessary disciplinary measures are being taken against them.

 

“The command is alive to its responsibilities as we have zero tolerance for crime. Also, a total of 26 armed robbery suspects and 18 suspected kidnappers were arrested by the command and we recovered two AK-47 rifles, 14 locally-made pistols and 193 live cartridges from them."

 

Over the last year, the Nigeria Police Force has stepped up plans to eliminate corruption and misconduct within its ranks. Historically, policemen have been known to collect bribes from members of the public and engage in other forms of unprofessional conduct.
