SOUTH African think tank the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) has predicted that Donald Trump could become the e most effective recruiting tool for terrorist organisations across the globe following his election as US president.
Yesterday, arch-conservative Mr Trump was declared the US president-elect following his surprise victory over favourite Hillary Clinton. During the campaign, Mr Trump promised to bar Muslims from entering the US and said he would adopt a very aggressive foreign policy in the Middle East.
International money markets became nervous following Mr Trump's triumph, amid signs that it will lead to global turmoil. ISS said it now fears that extremist Islamist terror groups will use the election of Mr Trump to recruit hardliners to their cause, citing his hardline rhetoric towards Muslims, his advocation of the use of torture and expressed desire to target the families of militants as potential terrorists.
Already, Trump’s campaign pledge to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the US has been used in a propaganda video by Al-Shabab, a Somali militant group aligned with Al-Qaeda. Several US neighbours like Cuba have already conducted military drills following Mr Trump's victory as they are uncertain of his foreign policy objectives.
