Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr plans to call up Turkish-based Nigerian-Hungarian Otigba

SUPER Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr looks set to invite Turkish based central defender Kenneth Otigba to the team when he publishes his next squad as part of a plan to strengthen his team as Nigeria prepares for the next round of World Cup qualifiers.

Since Mr Rohr took over the team earlier this year, Nigeria has won all four matches it played under him, including two World Cup qualifiers. However, Mr Rohr is constantly strengthening his squad and has been looking at several Nigerian-born players worldwide, with a view to handing them caps.

Otigba, 24, was born of a Hungarian mother and a Nigerian father and currently plays for Kasimpasa in the Turkish league. Next month, Mr Rohr intends to visit Turkey, where there are about 15 Nigerian players plying their trade and hopes to meet with Otigba with a view to getting him on board.

Apparently, in the past, Otigba has turned down the chance to play for Hungary in preference for Nigeria but he has been snubbed by past coaches of the team. However, he is not on a list of players that Mr Rohr will scout in Turkey during his planned visit to the country.

So far, Otigba has made nine appearances in the league with one goal and four yellow cards to his name and his invitation will no doubt add competition to the battle for the central defence spot of the Super Eagles. For now, William Troost Ekong and Leon Balogun are the preferred duo, with their combination earning them the nickname Onyibo Wall.
